Guide of Pozzallo

Pozzallo is a town on the southern coast of Sicily, located in the province of Ragusa. It is an excellent starting point to visit the east of Sicily and is rich in history and charm with an important port.

History

Fishermen and farmers were the first to inhabit it in the Byzantine era because it was a fertile land with a strategic location in the Mediterranean. Even today there are some remains from those ancient houses. Over the centuries it has come under the domination of many different populations, including the Saracens and the Arabs who called it Marsa as Deramini, port of the dromedaries.

Places to visit

Torre Palazzo Cabrera is both a national monument and symbol of the city, it was built in 1400 as a summer residence of the Count of Modica Bernardo Cabrera. It later became a warehouse to store food, especially wheat. Thanks to this complex of warehouses Pozzallo saw its importance in the region grow. The central square is called Piazza delle Rimembranzea and is surrounded by three historic buildings Palazzo Pandolfi, Palazzo Giunta and Palazzo Musso, which represent the power and wealth of a few local families who made history in this area. Vanedda Vicci is the quaint old town with a typical Sicilian atmosphere, there are lovely little alleys, food shops and little houses that provide some really picturesque views. Among the architectural beauties is Villa Germania, which is a 19th-century residence complete with frescos and highly decorated rooms that confirm the aristocratic heritage of the family.

Beaches

A fairly unknown, but very beautiful beach is Santa Maria del Focallo, it is eight kilometres long with soft light sand. It has crystal clear sea and unspoiled nature and tranquillity. This beach is ideal for both for families and for those who are not strong swimmers as the water is nice and shallow.
