Fishguard is located in Cardigan Bay, in Wales. The town is located in a deep valley, where the Gwaun River flows into the sea. It has an important port that was developed in the 20th century, connecting this part of Wales with Ireland.

A brief history of Fishguard

Around 950 and 1000 a.c. Viking populations from Norway settled around Fishguard and its name is derived from the Old Norse word for a place where Scandinavian populations had a trading base. The city developed as an important exchange hub for fishing and trade with Ireland. Fishguard was attacked and bombed in the late 1700s by the Black Prince privateer ship.

Where to visit in Fishguard

The town has been hosting the Fishguard Folk Festival every year since 1999 and over the years it has become increasingly popular. This festival provides an opportunity for folk musicians to make themselves known on the folk scene and express their art in a local context. The festival hosts all kinds of artists that play Celtic, Breton and Cornish folk music. Dyffryn Fernant Garden is also worth visiting, it has a great variety of colourful plants and flowers.

Beaches near Fishguard

Dinas Island is just off the coast of Fishguard, it is a small island with soft golden sand, surrounded by vegetation and turquoise water. A few kilometres from Fishguard is Rhos Wdig, a great place for fishing and enjoying a little peace and quiet.
