The port of Civitavecchia, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the central Italian region of Lazio, was built by Emperor Trajan in the second century AD. Long considered the “port of Rome,” Civitavecchia is now the first port for the ferry to Italy, relaunched thanks to the development of “motorways of the sea”, and the second port in Europe for the traffic of cruise ships. Civitavecchia is also known for sports (especially soccer, swimming and water polo) and liqueurs such as Sambuca, which was sold here for the first time by Luigi Manzi and then, at the international level, by Angelo Molinari. During World War II, Civitavecchia was literally destroyed by heavy bombing, which from May 1943 to June 1944…
