Guide of Savona

The city of Savona, on the Ligurian coast, has one of the most important tourist and commercial ports in the Mediterranean. The tower stands tall over the city and is named after the navigator Leon Pancaldo, who was born in Savona. According to popular legend, Savona is the city where a fisherman's wives were able to obtain soap for the first time - what a relief!

History

Savona has always been a rival to the city of Genoa, as seen during the Second Punic War, alongside Carthage. After an important period under the leadership of Carthage, the city went quiet until the nearby town of Vada Sabatia, dominated by the Romans lost its importance and Savona became a military and economic centre.

Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Savona became part of the Byzantine empire. Then taking a nice leap forward Savona was the place that Napoleon based his headquarters. Then during the Second World War, the city was sadly heavily bombed.

Places to visit

Do not miss the Fortress of Priamar in Savona, it is a military complex overlooking the city centre. The Torretta, originating from the Middle Ages is located near the port and has an inscription in the shape of a star, which is the symbol of the city. Among the historic buildings, the Palazzo Gavotti and Palazzo Imperiale are very beautiful along with Villa Cambiaso, where Napoleon lived. The Cathedral of the Assumption is the main church in Savona and it is attached to the museum which houses some important works of art.

Beaches
