How to book

How do I book a ferry on NetFerry?

Booking online with NetFerry is straightforward and consists of 5 steps:

  • Step 1 — Selection: choose your route, dates, number of passengers, vehicle type and preferred accommodation.

  • Step 2 — Accommodation: you can change your accommodation to upgrade from the option selected in the previous step (in step 1 the system always picks the cheapest accommodation).

  • Step 3 — Booking holder details: enter your name and surname, e-mail, phone number and preferred contact channel (e-mail / WhatsApp).

  • Step 4 — Passenger details: enter the names of all passengers and the vehicle details.

  • Step 5 — Payment: accept the ferry company's and NetFerry's terms and conditions and the privacy notice, then enter your payment details to confirm.

Once completed, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with your booking summary and the electronic ticket (where available).

How do I find a booking I made in the past?

If you booked as a guest:

If you have lost your booking code:

  • Search your inbox for terms such as "NetFerry confirmation" or "booking"

  • Write to us at info@netferry.com with your name, surname and booking date

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

Can I book for other people with my account?

When you book, we distinguish between:

  • Booking holder: the person who pays, receives the confirmation and manages any changes

  • Passengers: the people actually travelling

The booking holder may or may not be one of the passengers. For each passenger, you must enter the personal details exactly as they appear on their ID document.

💡 If you book for family or friends, remember to pass on the booking code and confirmation e-mail: they may be needed at the port.

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

What is the difference between standard and promo/special fares?

Ferry companies apply different fare types, which vary in price and flexibility:

STANDARD fare (or "Flex")

  • Higher price

  • Changes allowed at moderate cost

  • Refund available in case of cancellation (with increasing penalties)

  • Ideal if your dates are not fixed

SPECIAL / PROMO / SUPER SPECIAL fare

  • Price 15–30% lower than the standard fare

  • Changes not allowed or subject to heavy penalties

  • Non-refundable in case of cancellation

  • Ideal if your dates are fixed and you want to save

Other common fare types:

  • Early Booking: discount for booking well in advance (usually by May for summer sailings)

  • Last Minute: rare in the ferry sector; close to the departure date, prices tend to rise

  • Residents: reduced fare for residents of the islands (Sardinia, Sicily, minor islands)

  • Natives: some companies extend the discount to people born on the island

💡 In the booking form, always check in the summary which fare type you are buying and the change/refund conditions before confirming payment.

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

Can I add an emergency contact to my booking?

Adding an emergency contact is good practice, especially for:

  • Those travelling with young children or elderly people

  • Those with pre-existing medical conditions that might require assistance

  • Those travelling on long routes, overnight or international

How to add it:

  • When booking, in the notes field, write: "Emergency contact: [name, surname, phone number, relationship]"

  • Alternatively, after booking, write to info@netferry.com with your booking code and the details

What NetFerry does with this information:

  • It is passed to the ferry company for use in a genuine emergency only

  • It is not used for marketing communications

  • It is processed in accordance with the GDPR

💡 If the emergency contact is abroad, provide the number in international format (+ country code).

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

How close to departure can I book online?

Online booking deadlines vary by company and route:

Route type Online sales close
Frequent domestic routes (Sardinia, Sicily) 2–3 hours before departure
International routes (Greece, Croatia, Albania) 6–12 hours before
Non-EU routes (Tunisia, Morocco) 24–48 hours before (for border checks)
Hydrofoils and fast ferries 1–2 hours before

If the online system no longer allows booking:

  • Call +39 0831 564 257 during call centre hours

  • Outside opening hours, go directly to the company's port ticket office

  • Always check seat availability: in high season or on busy routes, last-minute places often sell out

💡 Don't wait until the last moment: close to departure, fares tend to be higher, not lower.

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

I don't know the vehicle's number plate: what should I enter?

The number plate field is required for most vehicle bookings, but there are solutions for special cases:

Hire vehicle (not yet collected at the time of booking):

  • Enter RENT or RENTAL in the plate field, or tick the dedicated box

  • Some companies require the final plate number at least 48 hours before boarding

  • At boarding, bring the original hire agreement

Newly purchased vehicle without a final plate:

  • Enter NEW in the plate field, or tick the dedicated box

  • Provide the final plate number as soon as it is available

  • At boarding, bring a copy of the sales contract and the temporary plate

Plate pending update:

  • For re-registered or foreign vehicles awaiting an update: enter the current temporary plate and provide the final one before boarding

⚠️ The declared plate must match the vehicle actually boarding. In case of discrepancy, amendment fees may be charged at the port or, in extreme cases, boarding may be refused.

Solutions:

  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies

  • Temporarily disable ad blockers and extensions

Confirmation and ticket

I paid but haven't received the confirmation e-mail: what should I do?

If you don't receive the confirmation:

  • Check the spam / junk folder of your mailbox

  • Make sure you entered a correct e-mail address during booking

  • Add info@netferry.com to your safe senders

If you have received nothing within 1 hour:

  • Check your bank statement to see whether the charge went through

  • Contact info@netferry.com providing:

    • Name and surname

    • Date of the booking attempt

    • Amount charged

    • Route booked

    • A screenshot of the confirmation page, if available

⚠️ In rare cases the payment may be authorised without the booking being completed: contact us and we can either refund you or issue the ticket.

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

Do I need to print the ticket, or is the PDF on my smartphone enough?

In general:

  • Digital ticket (PDF/QR code): accepted by most companies and on most routes

  • Paper ticket: still required by some smaller companies or for specific promotions

To be on the safe side:

  • Check the instructions in your confirmation e-mail: if printing is requested, print

  • Even with a digital ticket, print a backup copy: useful if your smartphone runs out of battery or has no signal at the port

  • Make sure your smartphone is charged at boarding time

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

Can I request an invoice for my ticket?

NetFerry issues a proper electronic invoice for private individuals with an Italian tax code, professionals and companies with a VAT number.

How to request it:

After completing your booking, send an e-mail to info@netferry.com with the subject "Invoice request – booking code XXXXX", providing:

  • Booking code

  • Company name or name/surname of the invoice holder

  • Full address of the registered office/residence

  • VAT number (or tax code for private individuals)

  • SdI recipient code (7 characters) or PEC address

  • A phone number for any queries

Issue times:

  • The invoice is issued within a few working days of receiving the details

  • A PDF copy is sent to you by e-mail

  • Official transmission is via the Italian Revenue Agency's Exchange System (SdI)

Important:

  • The request must be sent within 24 hours of the booking

  • The invoice details cannot be changed once it has been issued

  • Always double-check that your tax details are exactly right before sending them

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

What does "shared cabin" mean on my ticket?

Ferry tickets often use two wordings that raise questions:

1. "Whole" cabin

  • It means the cabin is used exclusively by the people in your booking

  • No other passengers will be assigned to it

  • Example: you book a 4-berth cabin and you are 4 friends → the cabin is shared among the 4 of you

2. "Sole occupancy" cabin

  • You book the entire cabin, paying for it in full even if you are fewer people than the available berths

  • Example: there are 2 of you and you book a 4-berth cabin for sole occupancy → you pay for 4 berths but the cabin is all yours

  • Useful for extra privacy or comfort (luggage, space)

3. Berth in a cabin shared with strangers

  • Some companies (mainly on Tunisia and Morocco routes) sell individual berths in 3–4 person cabins

  • You will be assigned a berth in a cabin with other passengers you don't know, of the same sex

  • The cheapest option for solo travellers

💡 When booking online, at the accommodation selection step, always check the exact description of the cabin: number of berths, sole occupancy or shared, male/female/mixed.

FAQ Category: Booking and payment

Changes and cancellations

Changing your booking

How can I change my booking?

You can request changes to your booking in two ways:

Every change involves:

  • A fixed NetFerry fee of €25.00 per amended booking

  • Any carrier penalties, which vary depending on the fare purchased

  • The fare difference between the original and the new ticket, if the latter is more expensive

⚠️ Changes are not allowed on tickets purchased at non-amendable fares (e.g. special offers, early booking, last minute promos).

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Can I change a passenger's name?

A name change (replacing one person with another on the same booking) is treated as an amendment and is subject to the rules of the ferry company and of the fare purchased:

  • Flexible fares: change usually allowed for a small charge

  • Standard fares: allowed but with a penalty

  • Promo / non-amendable fares: name change not permitted

💡 If the problem is just a spelling mistake (e.g. a wrong letter in the surname), report it immediately to info@netferry.com: in many cases it can be corrected free of charge within 24–48 hours of purchase.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Can I change the number of passengers or vehicles compared with the original booking?

  • To add passengers or vehicles: the change is always subject to availability on the sailing and in the accommodation. The added passengers or vehicles are charged at current prices, not at the original ticket's prices

  • To reduce the number: this counts as a partial cancellation, and the fare's penalties apply to the people/vehicles removed

  • In both cases: the fixed NetFerry fee of €25 per amended booking applies

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Outward and return with different numbers of passengers or vehicles: how do I book?

The online booking system requires the same number of passengers/vehicles on the outward and return legs. If your needs differ:

  • Make two separate bookings, each as a "one way"

  • Alternatively, contact our call centre on +39 0831 564 257: we can help you set up two coordinated bookings

💡 In some cases, by booking two separate legs you may lose the return discount offered by some companies. We can check together which option works out better.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

If I change my booking, will I receive a new ticket?

After every change confirmed by the company, you will receive a new e-mail with the updated ticket.

What to check in the new confirmation:

  • New departure/return date and time

  • New accommodation (cabin, seat)

  • Updated number of passengers and vehicles

  • New amount paid (including any differences)

  • Booking code: it may change or stay the same, depending on the company

At the port:

  • Present only the latest version of the ticket you received

  • Previous versions are no longer valid

  • If you printed the old version, bin it to avoid confusion

If you don't receive the new e-mail:

  • Check your spam folder

  • Make sure the change has been confirmed (in your account area or by e-mail)

  • Write to info@netferry.com to have the ticket re-sent

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

I've changed vehicle after booking: what should I do?

If, after booking, you change the vehicle you will be travelling with (new car, different model, a family member's vehicle, etc.), it is important to let us know promptly.

How to proceed:

  • Write to info@netferry.com with:

    1. Booking code

    2. New number plate

    3. Make and model of the new vehicle

    4. New dimensions (overall length and height)

    5. Then wait for the amendment confirmation

Possible costs:

  • If only the plate changes (same vehicle category): usually free or a small charge

  • If the dimensions change within the same fare band: free or a token charge

  • If the dimensions move up a category (e.g. from a standard car to an SUV with a roof box): fare difference + €25 fixed NetFerry fee + any carrier penalties

If the new vehicle is smaller: as a rule, no refund of the difference is given.

⚠️ Do not turn up at the port with a vehicle different from the one declared without having notified the change: you may have to pay increased fare differences or be refused boarding.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Cancellations and refunds

How can I cancel my booking and get a refund?

Cancellation can be requested:

What happens after the request:

  • NetFerry forwards the request to the ferry company

  • The company applies the penalties set by the fare purchased (they generally increase as the departure date approaches)

  • The €25 fixed NetFerry fee is retained, plus any non-refundable ancillary services (e.g. Refund Guarantee, booking fees)

  • The refund of the balance is processed within 20 working days of the request date

❌ Tickets bought as special offers, early booking or non-amendable promotions are generally non-refundable.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

How long does the refund take?

Refund times consist of two stages:

  • NetFerry processing: within 20 working days of the request date, once the cancellation confirmation has been received from the company

  • Actual bank credit: an additional 5–10 working days, depending on the technical times of your bank or payment network

The refund is made to the same payment method used at the time of booking (credit card, PayPal, etc.). It is not possible to request the refund to a different method or account.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Are NetFerry booking fees refundable?

NetFerry booking fees are the consideration for the online travel agency service:

  • Searching and comparing routes and companies

  • Technical handling of the booking

  • Ticket issue

  • Pre- and after-sales assistance

As this is a service already provided at the time of booking, the fees are non-refundable in case of cancellation, amendment or no-show. The same applies to the cost of the "Prenota Sereno" Guarantee, if purchased.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Can I cancel for personal reasons (illness, work)?

Cancelling for personal reasons is always possible, but the conditions depend on whether you have the "Prenota Sereno" Refund Guarantee:

Without the Guarantee:

  • The company's standard penalties apply

  • Within 24–48 hours of departure, penalties can reach 100% of the ticket

With the "Prenota Sereno" Guarantee:

  • You recover up to the amount of the ferry ticket

  • A flat 15% deduction applies

  • Excluded: the cost of the Guarantee and the booking fees

  • Only for unforeseen, documentable events (illness, injury, redundancy, etc.)

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Problems with the ferry company

What happens if the company cancels or delays the ferry?

If the ferry company cancels or significantly delays the sailing, you are entitled (EU Reg. 1177/2010) to:

  • Free re-routing on the next available sailing, or

  • A full refund of the ticket within 7 days

  • Assistance at the port (meals, drinks, overnight accommodation where needed) for delays of more than 90 minutes

  • Compensation of 25% to 50% of the ticket price for arrival delays beyond certain thresholds

What to do:

  • Contact the company immediately, at the port or by phone

  • Keep your ticket and every receipt for expenses incurred

  • Write to info@netferry.com: we can support you with the refund claim

ℹ️ NetFerry acts as an intermediary: responsibility for the transport lies with the carrier. We cannot issue refunds on the company's behalf, but we act as a go-between to speed up the procedure.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

The company has changed the timetable or the ship: what should I do?

Ferry companies may change timetables, ship or route for operational, technical or weather reasons. In these cases:

  • The ferry company notifies the passenger of any change by message or e-mail.

  • The ticket remains valid on the new sailing

  • If the change is substantial (change of date, significant delay, change of port), you are entitled to choose between:

    • Accepting the change

    • Requesting re-routing on another equivalent sailing

    • Requesting a full refund

⚠️ NetFerry passes your contact details on to the ferry company and is therefore not required to notify the passenger of any changes: the shipping operator is solely responsible for communicating with the passenger. Always check your e-mail (including the spam folder) in the days before departure for any service communications.

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

I missed the ferry: what happens to my ticket?

Failure to board for reasons attributable to the passenger (running late, traffic, forgotten documents) is treated by ferry companies as a no-show:

  • The ticket is automatically cancelled

  • As a rule, no refund is given

  • You must buy a new ticket for the next sailing, subject to availability

What you can try:

  • Go immediately to the company's ticket desk at the port

  • In some cases, if there is availability on a later ship, the company may offer a paid re-routing with a supplement

  • The decision is at the discretion of the company's staff

FAQ Category: Changes and cancellations

Prenota Sereno guarantee

What is the "Prenota Sereno" Refund Guarantee?

  • It applies only to unforeseen, documentable events occurring after purchase

What it refunds:

  • The cancellation penalties applied by the company and by NetFerry

  • Up to the amount of the ferry ticket

Documents and boarding

Required documents

Which documents do I need for ferry travel within Italy?

On Italian domestic routes, you must present at boarding:

  • A valid identity card, or

  • A valid passport

The document must be the one indicated at the time of booking. Discrepancies between the booking details and the document may lead to boarding being refused.

⚠️ Minors too, including infants, must have their own identity document. Being listed on a parent's identity card is not sufficient (rule in force in Italy since 2010).

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Which documents do I need for international ferries (Greece, Croatia, Albania, Spain)?

For EU countries (Greece, Croatia, Spain, France, Slovenia):

  • An Italian identity card valid for foreign travel, or

  • A valid passport

For non-EU countries (Albania, Tunisia, Morocco, Montenegro):

  • Passport recommended (for Albania, an identity card valid for foreign travel is still accepted for short stays)

  • Check any visa requirements

Remaining validity of the document: many countries require the document to be valid for a minimum period after the return date (usually 3–6 months). Check the destination country's rules on viaggiaresicuri.it.

ℹ️ Having valid documents is always the passenger's responsibility. If your documents are not in order, boarding may be refused with no right to a refund.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

What is the EES (Entry/Exit System) and when does it apply to ferries?

The EES (Entry/Exit System) is the European Union's new IT system for the digital control of the Schengen area's external borders.

Who it applies to:

  • Non-EU, non-Schengen nationals entering or leaving one of the 29 countries using the system

  • Travellers on short stays (max 90 days in any 180)

  • Both visa holders and visa-exempt travellers

NetFerry routes affected:

  • Italy ↔︎ Tunisia (Palermo–Tunis, Genoa–Tunis, etc.)

  • Italy/Spain ↔︎ Morocco (Genoa–Tangier, Barcelona–Tangier)

  • Italy ↔︎ Albania (Bari/Brindisi/Ancona–Durrës/Vlorë)

  • Italy ↔︎ Montenegro (Bari–Bar)

  • Routes to/from the United Kingdom

What happens at the port:

  • On your first crossing, fingerprints and a facial image are taken

  • The data is stored for 3 years

  • On subsequent trips, checks are faster: biometric verification only

Practical impact:

  • Registration is free

  • On your first trip, checks may take longer

  • Arrive at the port with an extra 30–60 minutes compared with usual

  • Make sure you have a valid passport (identity cards are not enough for non-EU countries)

💡 Italian and EU nationals are not subject to the EES when travelling between EU countries, but may be affected if travelling with family members holding non-EU passports.

For official updates: European Commission — EES.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

What is ETIAS and when do I need to apply for it?

NetFerry routes affected:

If you are a national of a country subject to ETIAS and you book routes to or from Greece, Italy, Spain, France or Croatia, you will need to hold an ETIAS authorisation at boarding time.

⚠️ Actual entry into force is expected in the last quarter of 2026. Before departure, always check the official website: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias.

Cost: around €29–31 (stamp duty + licensing authority fees). Issue times: 2–3 weeks.

Documents you must always carry in the car abroad:

  • Original licence (+ International Driving Permit where required)

  • Vehicle registration document

  • Insurance certificate with international validity (Green Card)

  • If you are not the vehicle's owner: an authenticated owner's authorisation

💡 For car hire in Morocco, Tunisia and Albania, many operators accept only an International Driving Permit + passport. Take it with you even where it is not legally required.

Travelling with children

Do children and infants need their own documents?

Since 2010, Italian law requires all minors, including infants, to hold their own identity document:

  • An identity card for minors (obtainable from the municipality; valid 3 years for ages 0–3, 5 years for ages 3–18)

  • Alternatively, a passport for minors

For travel abroad, minors under 14 must also be accompanied by at least one parent or by a delegated person holding an accompanying declaration endorsed by the police authority (Questura).

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Can a minor travel alone or accompanied by third parties?

The rules depend on the ferry company, but in general:

Unaccompanied minors:

  • Many companies do not accept passengers under 15–18 years of age without an accompanying adult

  • Where allowed, a waiver signed by the parents is required, sometimes authenticated by the municipality or the police authority (Questura)

  • On international routes, an authorisation for travel abroad is mandatory

Minors accompanied by third parties (not their parents):

  • For travel abroad: an accompanying declaration signed by both parents and endorsed by the police authority (Questura) is required

  • A document valid for foreign travel

💡 Before booking for an unaccompanied minor, call us on +39 0831 564 257: we can check together whether the company accepts the journey.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Can I travel while pregnant?

The rules vary from one company to another, but as a general guide:

  • Up to the 28th–32nd week: travel allowed with no special documentation

  • From the 28th–32nd week onwards: a medical certificate is required stating fitness for sea travel on the planned date

  • The last few days before the due date: travel is generally not allowed

⚠️ Only ships carrying more than 500 passengers are required to have a doctor on board (Italian Ministerial Decree of 13/06/1986). Smaller ships carry a first-aid kit but no medical staff.

Always consult your doctor and check the specific conditions of the company you will be travelling with.

Getting to the port

How early should I arrive at the port?

Recommended arrival times at the port:

Type Minimum advance
Foot passengers, short domestic routes 60 minutes
Passengers with a vehicle, domestic routes 90–120 minutes
International routes (Greece, Albania) 120–180 minutes
Oversized vehicles (motorhomes, articulated lorries) 180 minutes
Travelling with pets, dedicated check-in 120 minutes

Check-in:

  • Usually closes 30 minutes before departure

  • For fast ferries (hydrofoils, catamarans), even 45–60 minutes before

⚠️ Allow extra time for: traffic around the port area, border checks, ticket-office queues in the summer months. The port arrival time stated on your booking confirmation always prevails.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

How do I get to the departure port?

For every port in our system you will find:

  • Driving directions integrated with Google Maps

  • Contact details of the port authority

  • Information on partner and paid car parks

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Are there restrictions on landing vehicles on the smaller islands?

Many of Italy's smaller islands apply restrictions on the entry of non-residents' vehicles to protect the environment and manage tourist traffic.

Examples of common restrictions:

  • Capri: absolute ban on non-residents' cars all year round (special authorisation for exceptional cases)

  • Ischia and Procida: seasonal restrictions (usually 15 June to 30 September) for non-residents' cars; bus/scooter options remain open

  • Ponza, Ventotene: seasonal bans for non-residents between Easter and September

  • Aeolian Islands: vehicle restrictions, often limited to authorised residents + services

  • Giglio Island: restrictions on non-residents' cars in summer

  • Tremiti Islands: absolute ban on landing cars (San Domino, San Nicola)

  • Smaller Sicilian islands (Favignana, Lampedusa, Ustica): variable seasonal restrictions

What to do before booking:

  • Check the island's municipal ordinances for the current year

  • Contact the municipality or the local port authority

  • If a ban applies: book foot-passenger deck passage only and use local public transport or on-site hire services

⚠️ NetFerry is not responsible if a vehicle cannot be boarded due to the bans listed above: it is the passenger's responsibility to check with the competent authorities.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Check-in and boarding

Do I need to check in online?

Online check-in is not required by all companies:

  • Companies with online check-in: you receive a link by e-mail; check in online and print your boarding card

  • Companies without online check-in: present your ticket and identity documents at the port ticket office. You will receive your boarding card at the desk

💡 Even where online check-in is available, some categories must still check in physically at the port: passengers with a vehicle, pets, reduced mobility, or resident fares.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

What happens if the details I entered differ from my documents?

The details entered when booking must match exactly those on the documents you will present at boarding.

Types of error:

  • Minor error (wrong letter, accent): usually correctable free of charge if reported immediately

  • Substantial error (different name): treated as a name change, with costs

  • Expired document: the company may refuse boarding

📩 Report any error immediately to info@netferry.com with your booking code and the correction required.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

I forgot my ID at the port: can I still board?

The rules differ between domestic and international routes.

Italian domestic routes (Sardinia, Sicily, smaller islands):

  • Some companies are more flexible if you have forgotten your document

  • They may accept:

    • A photo copy of the document on your phone (both sides, legible)

    • Your driving licence as a substitute document

    • Your electronic passport if you have it instead of the identity card

  • The final decision rests with the company's staff: they may still refuse boarding

International routes (Greece, Croatia, Spain, Albania, etc.):

  • Original document required: identity card valid for foreign travel or passport

  • Photo copies are not accepted at border checks

  • Without a document: boarding refused with no refund

What to do if you realise at the port that you don't have your document:

  • Go immediately to the company's ticket desk

  • If you live nearby, consider going back to collect it (you will miss the sailing)

  • For lost documents, file a report with the police (Questura): the report may allow boarding on domestic routes

💡 Prevention is best: photograph both sides of every passenger's documents before leaving and save them in a synced (cloud) folder accessible from your smartphone.

FAQ Category: Documents and boarding

Your vehicle

Cars and dimensions

Which vehicle dimensions should I declare?

Dimensions must be measured "overall", i.e. including any accessory fitted to the vehicle:

  • Closed roof box

  • Rear or roof-mounted bike rack

  • Roof rack

  • Tow bar (rear overhang)

  • Wing mirrors (if they protrude beyond the standard profile)

What happens if the declared dimensions are smaller than the real ones:

  • The company may charge a supplement at the port

  • In cases of overbooking or unmanageable size, boarding may be refused

💡 Check the vehicle registration document for the official measurements, but always measure any fitted accessories as well.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I book with a hire vehicle?

For hire vehicles:

  • Number plate: enter "RENT" or "RENTAL" in the plate field, or tick the dedicated box.

  • Dimensions: estimate length and height based on the model booked. If in doubt, choose a slightly higher category to be safe

  • Plate update: some companies require the final plate number to be provided before boarding

  • Documents: always bring the hire agreement + the hire company's permission to take the vehicle abroad

⚠️ Check in the hire agreement whether the rental company allows the vehicle to be taken abroad or to the islands.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I board a trailer or a small luggage trailer?

Trailers are accepted on most routes. You must specify:

  • Type: standard trailer, caravan, small luggage trailer, boat trailer, etc.

  • Length and height of the trailer (separate from the towing vehicle)

  • Any load (for example a boat or snowmobile)

The fare is calculated on the overall length of the combination (car + trailer).

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

My vehicle carries goods: can I book as a passenger?

The online booking system only allows bookings for vehicles intended to carry people (cars, motorbikes, motorhomes, private vans).

Vehicles carrying goods for:

  • Commercial sale

  • Business use

  • Export

must be booked through our dedicated cargo office. Write to cargo@netferry.com stating:

  • Vehicle type (gross weight, dimensions)

  • Type of goods

  • Route and dates

  • Company details (VAT number, company name)

  • Number of drivers

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I access my vehicle during the crossing?

The car decks are inaccessible during the voyage for safety reasons (fire risk, gas, vehicle movement in rough seas). Before going up to the passenger decks, take from your vehicle:

  • Identity documents

  • Necessary medicines

  • A change of clothes for the night (on overnight ferries)

  • Personal hygiene items

  • Snacks, drinks, baby bottles

  • Valuables (do not leave cash, jewellery or expensive electronics in the car)

Pets: they cannot stay in the car.

Exception: the Camping on Board service allows access to your motorhome during the crossing, but only on some routes.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

I have an LPG or CNG vehicle: what do I need to declare?

Vehicles powered by LPG or natural gas (cars, motorhomes) are allowed on most routes, but they require specific on-board safety procedures.

What to declare when booking:

  • State the fuel type (LPG, CNG, LNG) in the booking's notes field

  • In some cases, the booking system has a dedicated field

  • If there is no dedicated field, write to info@netferry.com with your booking code

What to do at boarding:

  • Inform the port staff of the vehicle's fuel type

  • Make sure the cylinder valve is closed as instructed by the staff

  • Follow the instructions on the assigned car deck: many companies reserve specific decks for gas-powered vehicles

  • Do not reopen the gas during the voyage

Dual-fuel systems (petrol/LPG):

  • Some companies require travelling with the petrol system active and the gas shut off

⚠️ Failure to declare the fuel type can lead to boarding being refused or to penalties under maritime regulations (SOLAS).

For specific queries about your company, call +39 0831 564 257: we can check the correct procedure together.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

I have an electric or plug-in hybrid car: are there special rules?

Electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars are allowed on most routes, with some specific safety rules.

What to declare when booking:

  • In the booking's notes field, state: "Electric car" or "Plug-in hybrid"

  • If the system has dedicated fields, select them

Rules at boarding:

  • Many companies require a minimum battery level (usually 40–50%) so the vehicle can disembark under its own power

  • Some companies reserve specific car decks for electric cars

  • The vehicle must be completely switched off during the voyage

  • External charging cables must not be left connected

Charging on board:

  • Charging on the car deck is not available on nearly all ships

  • Some companies are trialling pilot services, but it is not yet standard

  • Plan your charging before boarding and/or after disembarking

If the battery is flat at disembarkation:

  • The company may have towing/assistance procedures, but at your expense

  • Always check the company's conditions before setting off with a low battery

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I include two vehicles in the same booking?

The companies' online booking systems generally accept only one vehicle per booking.

Typical cases:

  • A family with a car + a motorbike

  • A couple with two cars

  • A group of friends with several vehicles

Possible solutions:

Option 1 — Two separate bookings

  • Make two separate bookings, each with one vehicle

  • Assign different passengers to each vehicle (the driver)

  • Make sure both bookings are on the same sailing

Option 2 — Contact the call centre

  • Call +39 0831 564 257

  • We can link the two bookings together

  • We can arrange adjacent cabins where possible

Watch out for vehicle capacity:

  • Every additional vehicle is subject to availability on the ship

  • In high season, garage space fills up quickly: book well in advance

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I book passage for the vehicle only, without a driver?

Maritime regulations (SOLAS and the Italian Navigation Code) require that every vehicle boarded be accompanied by an adult driver who takes responsibility for it for the whole journey.

It is therefore not possible to:

  • Book passage for the vehicle only, without a person

  • Entrust the vehicle to the ship's crew for disembarkation

  • Hand the car over to another passenger at the arrival port (unless they are the driver declared in the booking)

What to do instead:

1. Commercial transport of the vehicle (without a driver)

  • This is a freight service handled by our dedicated office

  • Write to cargo@netferry.com with:

    • Vehicle model and dimensions

    • Desired route

    • Contact details

You will receive a quote within 24–48 hours.

2. Finding a driver

  • A friend or relative who takes the vehicle in your place (they must be the declared passenger)

  • Professional vehicle transfer services

3. Booking as a normal passenger with a vehicle

  • If you can accompany the vehicle yourself, book as usual

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Motorhomes and caravans

Can I board a motorhome or campervan?

Motorhomes are accepted on virtually all sea routes, with these precautions:

  • Dimensions: declare the overall length and height, including any accessories (bike rack, aerial, roof-mounted air conditioner)

  • Load: by law, the motorhome must comply with its fully laden weight limits

  • Camping on Board: some companies and routes offer this service, which allows you to stay overnight in your motorhome on the ship's open deck

⚠️ For motorhomes taller than 2.90 m, always check access to the car decks of the specific ship: some older ferries have height limits.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Motorbikes, bicycles, scooters

Can I bring a motorbike or scooter?

Motorbikes and scooters are allowed on almost all routes. Practical notes:

  • Fares by engine size: usually divided into 3–4 bands (e.g. under 125cc, 126–250cc, 251–750cc, over 750cc)

  • Luggage: helmets and small bags can stay with the bike on the car deck. Bulky luggage is best taken to your cabin

  • Safety during the voyage: the bike is secured with cables and straps by the ship's crew

💡 In rough seas, motorbikes can suffer minor knocks due to the ship's movement: a waterproof cover is recommended for touring bikes. If your vehicle is damaged, report the incident on the spot to the ship's purser.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I bring a bicycle?

Bike on the car's bike rack:

  • It counts towards the vehicle's dimensions (rear overhang or height)

  • Include it in the "overall" measurement

Bike boarded separately (foot passenger):

  • Charged as special luggage (usually €5–15 per leg)

  • It must be declared when booking

  • On board, it is secured in the areas dedicated to small cargo

E-bikes and electric bicycles: generally treated like normal bicycles. Check whether the battery can stay fitted.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Can I board electric scooters, hoverboards or e-scooters?

For personal mobility devices (electric scooters, hoverboards, e-scooters), the rules vary by company:

  • Accepted as personal luggage: if compact in size and limited in power

  • Battery limits: some companies set limits on lithium battery capacity (usually up to 160 Wh without authorisation)

  • Charging on board: generally not allowed for safety reasons

⚠️ For devices with high-capacity (over 160 Wh) or damaged batteries, boarding may be refused.

FAQ Category: Your vehicle

Camping on board

What is Camping on Board?

Camping on Board (COB) is a service offered by some companies for motorhome travellers:

  • The motorhome is positioned on an open deck of the ship

  • Electrical hook-up (220V) provided on board

  • You can access your motorhome during the crossing and sleep in it

  • You pay the deck passage fare + the vehicle fare, with no need for a cabin

FAQ Category: Pets on board

What is the European pet passport and how do I get one?

The European pet passport is a document standardised across the EU (EU Regulation 576/2013) which identifies the animal and certifies its health status.

Who needs it:

  • Anyone travelling with dogs, cats or ferrets between EU countries

  • Anyone entering the EU from non-EU countries with pets

  • Not compulsory for purely domestic journeys (within Italy), but recommended

What it contains:

  • Description of the animal and microchip number

  • Owner's details

  • Vaccinations given (in particular rabies)

  • Anti-parasite treatments

  • Health certificates

How to get one:

  • Go to your authorised vet (private or public health service)

  • Make sure the animal has

    1. An identification microchip

    2. A valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before travel, for the first dose)

    3. A minimum age of 12 weeks at the time of the first vaccination

    4. Cost: around €20–40 (issue) + the cost of vaccinations

  • The passport is valid for the animal's whole life, subject to vaccine updates

For non-EU routes (Tunisia, Morocco, Albania):

  • An additional country-specific health certificate may be needed

  • Some countries require certified anti-parasite treatments in the 5–10 days before travel

  • Always check with the destination country's embassy

💡 Prepare the pet passport at least 30–60 days before the journey, especially if it is the animal's first rabies vaccination.

FAQ Category: Pets on board

Are some dog breeds not allowed on certain routes?

Some destinations and companies apply restrictions on specific dog breeds, usually those classed as "potentially dangerous" or covered by local regulations.

Tunisia — Import ban

Based on official communications from the Tunisian Ministry of Transport (OMMP), dogs of the following breeds are banned from entering Tunisia by sea:

  • Pit Bull Terrier and American Pit Bull

  • Rottweiler

  • Tosa Inu

  • Mastiff (Bullmastiff, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro)

  • Boer Bull (Boerboel)

  • Crosses of these breeds

Additional rules of some companies:

  • Muzzle always compulsory for large breeds in common areas

  • Some breeds banned from pet-friendly cabins

  • Additional deposit for large breeds

What to do:

  • Always check the specific rules of the company you will travel with

  • If you are unsure about your dog's breed (especially crosses), ask your vet for a written statement

  • For Tunisia: if your dog is one of the banned breeds, boarding will be refused without a refund

Italian regulations:

  • Italy no longer has a "dangerous breeds list" (it was repealed after the 2009 Martini ordinance)

  • The owner nonetheless remains responsible for the dog's behaviour

  • Muzzle and short lead (max 1.5 m) are always compulsory in public places

💡 If in doubt about whether your dog is allowed, call +39 0831 564 257 before booking.

What is early booking? When is the best time to book?

Early booking is the promotion that rewards those who book well in advance. Key features:

  • Typical discounts: 15%–30% off the standard fare

  • Promotion deadline: usually by the end of May for the summer season

  • Limited availability: a set quota of places for each ship and accommodation category

  • The fare is often non-changeable / non-refundable: always read the conditions

💡 When to book:

  • Summer (June–August): book between January and March

  • Public holidays and long weekends: at least 2–3 months in advance

  • Very busy routes: book as soon as the timetables are released

FAQ Category: Fares and discounts

Are there last-minute offers?

Last-minute offers do exist, but they are much less common in the ferry sector:

  • Companies try to maximise advance sales with early booking

  • Only if unsold places remain might they publish last-minute promotions

  • Close to the departure date, fares tend to rise, not fall

Booking last minute only makes sense if:

  • You are fully flexible on date and route

  • You are happy with "budget" accommodation (deck passage)

  • You travel in low season

Sign up to our newsletter to be notified of any last-minute promotions.

FAQ Category: Fares and discounts

What are port taxes and why do you pay them?

Port taxes are compulsory charges set by the maritime authorities of each port. They generally include:

  • ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security): security charge

  • Quay and mooring dues

  • Embarkation/disembarkation tax (varies by port)

  • Any local visitor levies (e.g. on some Greek islands)

They are always included in the ticket price shown during booking.

FAQ Category: Fares and discounts

I have a NetFerry discount code: how do I use it?

NetFerry discount codes are distributed through targeted campaigns: newsletters, partnerships, seasonal promotions and various initiatives.

How to apply the code:

  • Complete the route search and choose your accommodation

  • Go to the accommodation selection page (Step 2)

  • Find the "Discount code" field (or "Voucher", "Coupon")

  • Enter the code exactly as you received it (it is case-sensitive)

  • Click "Apply": the discount will be deducted from the total

  • Continue with the passenger details and payment

Usage rules:

  • One code only per booking

  • Cannot be combined with other promotions unless stated otherwise

  • Each code has an expiry date and sometimes specific routes/companies

  • The discount is usually applied to the basic fare, not to taxes and charges

If the code does not work:

  • Check that it is still valid

  • Check that the route or date is eligible

  • Try typing it in manually (without copying extra spaces)

  • Contact us at info@netferry.com with the code and the attempted booking

💡 To receive discount codes, sign up to our newsletter from the website footer.

FAQ Category: Fares and discounts

What are visitor and disembarkation taxes, and when do you pay them?

Visitor taxes and disembarkation taxes are local charges applied by some authorities for tourism or environmental purposes.

Taxes ALREADY INCLUDED in the ticket:

  • Disembarkation tax for Italy's smaller islands: applied by some municipalities on arrival (Ponza, Ventotene, some smaller islands). Usually €1–3 per person

  • Balearic eco-tax (Ibiza, Majorca, Formentera): since 2016, usually €1–4 per person per night, often already charged on board or included

  • ISPS port charges: included in all tickets

Taxes to pay DIRECTLY on site:

  • Hotel visitor tax: paid directly to the hotel at check-out (variable: from €0.50 to €7 per night depending on the destination)

  • Specific municipal charges: some municipalities introduce separate levies (always check locally)

How to check what you have already paid:

  • In the NetFerry booking summary, the item "Port taxes and charges" includes the compulsory maritime taxes

  • Hotel visitor taxes are separate and not included in the ferry ticket

My company or association has an agreement: how do I use it?

NetFerry manages several types of commercial agreements with companies, associations and public bodies.

How to use an existing agreement:

  • Check with your company/association how it works in practice (usually a discount code or a dedicated portal)

  • Enter the code in the relevant field when booking

  • At boarding, show your membership card or employer's certificate if required

Types of agreements we manage:

  • Corporate: ticket discounts for employees of partner companies

  • Professional associations: professional bodies, trade unions, trade associations

  • Public bodies: armed forces, police forces, magistrates (often already managed by individual companies)

  • Company recreation clubs: employee groups with recreational benefits

Setting up a new agreement for your company:

If you represent a company or association interested in signing an agreement with NetFerry, write to info@netferry.com stating:

  • Company name and VAT number

  • Approximate number of employees/members

  • Most-used routes

  • Commercial contact person

One of our managers will contact you to define the conditions.

FAQ Category: Fares and discounts

Is there always a discount when booking a return trip?

The pricing logic for return vs one-way tickets is more complex than you might think.

Companies with an automatic return discount:

  • They apply discounts of 5% to 15% on the combination

  • Some require the return date to be within X days (e.g. 30 days)

  • Examples: SNAV, Ventouris, some Greek routes

Companies with no return discount:

  • They simply add together the two single-leg fares

  • In this case, booking a return or two separate tickets costs the same

Cases where ONE-WAY + ONE-WAY works out cheaper:

  • If the early booking fare is only available on one of the two dates

  • If you have a resident fare valid in one direction only

  • If the legs are operated by different companies

  • If one leg is on special promotion and the other in high season

What NetFerry does:

Our booking system calculates both the available return combinations and the cost of two one-way tickets, showing the best-value solution. Just set the correct dates.

💡 For very busy routes (Greece in August, Sardinia in July), booking the return together often also secures closer cabins and a better chance of a place on the same ship.

On board

Cabins and accommodation

Which types of accommodation can I choose?

The accommodation available varies by company and ship:

  • Deck passage: the cheapest. Access to common areas, no assigned seat

  • Reclining seat: an assigned seat in dedicated lounges

  • Inside cabin: a private room without a porthole, usually 2–4 berths, private bathroom

  • Outside cabin: a private room with a porthole or sea-view window, private bathroom

  • Deluxe cabin / Suite: more space, premium services, balcony (on some ships)

  • Family cabins: 4–6 beds, ideal for families

  • Pet-friendly cabins: where pets are allowed

  • Accessible cabins: equipped with an accessible bathroom

💡 For overnight crossings of more than 8 hours we always recommend a cabin: you will sleep better and arrive rested.

FAQ Category: On board

How are cabins and seats assigned?

The assignment process varies depending on the company:

Assignment at check-in at the port

  • Most companies assign the specific cabin or seat number at check-in

  • The system takes into account:

    • Number of passengers per booking

    • Passengers' gender (for shared mixed cabins)

    • Presence of pets

    • PRM needs

    • Loyalty (regular customers may receive better accommodation)

Automatic assignment at booking

  • Some companies assign the cabin/seat automatically at the time of booking

  • The number appears directly on the confirmation

Booking a specific cabin (rare):

  • On cruise-ferry ships, some "Suite Experience" packages let you choose your cabin

  • On some long overnight routes you can request a cabin in a preferred position (e.g. away from the engines) via the call centre

For special needs:

  • Adjacent cabins for groups or families: mention it in the notes field

  • A quieter cabin (upper deck, away from the engines): request via the call centre

  • PRM cabin: always to be requested via the call centre

💡 In high season, assignment is stricter to manage the flow of passengers: check in early to have more options.

FAQ Category: On board

On-board services

Which services are available on board?

Typical on-board services (they vary by ship):

  • Catering: bar/snack bar, self-service, à la carte restaurant

  • Shopping: duty-free shop, minimarket, newsagent

  • Entertainment: TV, games room, cinema or evening shows

  • Families: children's area, baby pit-stop

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (free or paid)

  • Relaxation: solarium, terraces, on some ships a swimming pool

  • Pets: pet areas, kennels

For the specific services of each ship, see the company's dedicated page on www.netferry.com.

FAQ Category: On board

Is there Wi-Fi on board? Does it work for the whole crossing?

Wi-Fi is available on most modern ships, but:

  • Satellite connection: it depends on the weather and the ship's position

  • Limited speed: suitable for chat, e-mail and basic browsing; not for video streaming

  • Cost: some companies offer free Wi-Fi, others provide it only in higher-category cabins

Alternatives:

  • Mobile data (4G/5G): works near the coast, drops in the open sea

  • International roaming: within the EU usually with no surcharge; outside the EU it can be expensive

FAQ Category: On board

I have a food intolerance or allergy: what will I find on board?

The catering on the main ships offers alternatives for the most common dietary needs, but availability depends on the company, the ship and the length of the crossing.

What to report when booking:

  • In the booking's notes field, state each passenger's intolerances/allergies

  • Specify whether it is a severe allergy (with anaphylactic risk) or an intolerance

Typical dietary menus available on board:

  • Gluten-free (coeliac disease): dedicated bread, pasta, desserts (sometimes with a supplement)

  • Lactose-free: plant-based alternatives

  • Vegetarian and vegan

  • Kosher and halal: only on some specific routes (e.g. Tunisia, Israel)

On board:

  • At mealtimes, tell the restaurant staff about your intolerance

  • Ask for the list of ingredients if in doubt

  • For severe allergies, ask for confirmation about preparation free from cross-contamination

Practical tips:

  • Bring your own snacks for emergencies (gluten-free bars, lactose-free biscuits, dried fruit and nuts)

  • On short crossings (2–4 hours) you may not find specific menus: eat before or after

  • If you have a severe allergy, carry your life-saving medication in your hand luggage

ℹ️ The specific details vary a lot: if you have particular needs, call us on +39 0831 564 257 before booking to check what your chosen company offers.

FAQ Category: On board

I forgot or lost an item on board: how do I get it back?

Each ferry company has its own lost property office with specific procedures and timescales.

What to do straight away:

  • If you notice on board: go straight to the ship's reception or the purser

  • If you notice just after disembarking: go back to the company's desk at the port

  • If you notice later: write to the company's customer service (each company has a dedicated contact)

Details to provide:

  • Booking code and/or ticket

  • Ship and travel date

  • Cabin or area where it was lost

  • A detailed description of the item (brand, colour, contents)

  • Photos if possible

How to contact the lost property offices (indicative):

  • Grimaldi Lines: oggetti.smarriti@grimaldi.napoli.it

  • Moby / Tirrenia: dedicated customer service on moby.it

  • GNV: online form on gnv.it

  • Other companies: contacts in the booking confirmation e-mail

If you have trouble making contact:

  • Write to info@netferry.com with your booking code and a description

  • We will act as an intermediary with the company

Timescales:

  • If the item is found, you will be contacted to collect it (at the port, or shipped at the customer's expense)

  • After 30–60 days, unclaimed items are usually donated to charity or destroyed

💡 To reduce the risk: photograph your cabin before leaving it, as a reminder of where you put important items.

FAQ Category: On board

Does the ticket price include meals on board?

In the vast majority of cases, the price of the ferry ticket does not include food and drinks.

What is NOT included in the standard ticket:

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner

  • Drinks at the bar

  • Snacks, coffee, ice cream

  • Cabin service (where available)

What IS generally included:

  • Use of the common areas (lounges, decks, TV room)

  • The accommodation chosen (cabin, seat, deck passage)

  • Toilet facilities and fresh linen in the cabin

  • On some ships: free limited Wi-Fi

Exceptions with meals included:

  • Suites / Deluxe cabins: some companies include breakfast or dinner on some long routes

  • "All inclusive" packages: rare in the ferry sector, more typical of cruises

  • Pre-purchased meals: when booking you can add prepaid meals (often cheaper than on board)

Indicative prices on board:

  • Self-service breakfast: €8–15

  • Self-service lunch/dinner menu: €15–25

  • À la carte restaurant: €25–50 per person

  • Sandwich/pizza at the bar: €5–10

  • Drink: €2–5

Prices in euros: on nearly all ships in the Mediterranean you pay in euros. On routes to the UK, pounds sterling may also be accepted.

💡 On short daytime crossings, many passengers bring food from home. On long overnight crossings, eating on board is almost unavoidable: consider pre-purchased meals to save money.

FAQ Category: On board

Can I buy meals in advance together with my ticket?

Many ferry companies let you prepay meals together with your ticket, often at a discount compared with on-board prices.

How it works:

  • When booking, after choosing your accommodation, the "Extra services" or "Meals on board" section appears

  • Select the meals you want for each passenger

  • The cost is added to the total

  • At boarding you will receive a voucher, or a note on your ticket, to use them

Typical options:

  • Breakfast: around €6–10 (self-service)

  • Lunch/dinner menu: around €12–20 (self-service or simple à la carte)

  • Children's menu: reduced prices with family-friendly options

  • Special menus: gluten-free, vegetarian (on request)

Advantages:

  • An average discount of 10–20% compared with the on-board price

  • Less stress and fewer queues on board

  • Price locked in at the time of booking

  • On some routes, a pre-purchased meal gives you priority seating in the restaurant

If the option is not visible online:

  • With some companies, prepaid meals can be added only via the call centre

  • Call us on +39 0831 564 257: we can add them to your existing booking

💡 Ideal on long overnight crossings (Greece, Spain): you save money and are sure to be able to dine on board even in high season.

FAQ Category: On board

Can I pay in cash on board, or only by card?

The payment methods accepted on board vary slightly by company and ship.

Always accepted on most ships:

  • Cash in euros

  • Visa and Mastercard credit cards

  • Debit cards on international networks

Often accepted:

  • American Express (check first)

  • Apple Pay / Google Pay (on the more modern ships)

  • Prepaid cards on the Visa/Mastercard networks

Rarely or never accepted:

  • Bank cheques

  • Cryptocurrencies

  • Debit cards on domestic-only networks

On non-euro routes (UK, Tunisia, Morocco):

  • On ships on routes to the United Kingdom: pounds sterling and euros accepted (sometimes at less favourable rates)

  • On ships on routes to Tunisia/Morocco: usually only euros accepted on board; Tunisian dinars/Moroccan dirhams can only be exchanged ashore

Practical tips:

  • Always carry some cash in euros for small expenses (tips, coffee at the bar)

  • Check that your card is enabled for use abroad if travelling outside the EU

  • For cash withdrawals on board: some ships have ATMs (with variable fees)

  • Invoices for on-board services can be requested directly at the restaurant/reception

💡 You have already paid for your NetFerry ticket online: on board you will only pay for optional extras (non-prepaid meals, bar, shops, games).

FAQ Category: On board

Is there a doctor on board ferries?

The presence of medical staff on board is governed by Italian regulations (Ministerial Decree of 13/06/1986) and international rules:

Ships with more than 500 passengers:

  • A doctor, and sometimes a nurse, must be on board

  • A medical room equipped for emergencies and minor procedures

  • First-aid medicines

  • The service is generally chargeable for non-urgent consultations (variable fees)

  • Emergencies are always free

Ships with fewer than 500 passengers:

  • Medical staff are not compulsory

  • A first-aid kit is available to the ship's crew

  • In an emergency, the ship makes contact with:

    • The Coast Guard for rescue

    • Maritime medical advice centres (CIRM – the International Radio Medical Centre)

What you should do:

  • If you have pre-existing conditions, bring with you:

    1. Enough medication for the whole journey

    2. The medical prescription and information leaflet

    3. A certificate from your doctor (especially for serious conditions)

  • If you need specialised assistance during the voyage, tell reception at boarding

  • If you feel unwell during the crossing, contact the ship's crew immediately

Serious emergencies:

  • The ship may be diverted to the nearest port

  • Helicopter rescue may be requested if life is at risk

  • These are decisions for the ship's Master in coordination with the Coast Guard

💡 For long crossings (Greece, Spain, overnight), always check before booking whether the chosen ship has medical staff: useful information for elderly people and those with medical conditions.

Your rights

What are my rights as a passenger if there are problems with the carrier?

The rights of maritime passengers in Europe are guaranteed by Regulation (EU) No 1177/2010:

  • Right to timely information on cancellations and delays

  • Free re-routing or a refund in the event of cancellation/significant delay

  • Assistance at the port for prolonged delays

  • Compensation of 25% to 50% of the ticket price for arrival delays beyond set thresholds

  • Free assistance for people with disabilities or reduced mobility

  • Right to complain within 2 months of the incident

How to complain:

  • First step: write to the ferry company following the procedure set out in its conditions

  • Second step (if unresolved): contact the Italian Transport Regulation Authority (ART)

FAQ Category: Useful information

Can I complain directly to NetFerry?

You can contact NetFerry directly for:

  • Ticket issuing errors attributable to our platform

  • Problems with the website or booking system

  • Shortcomings in our customer service

  • Complaints about invoices or administrative matters

How to contact us:

  • E-mail: info@netferry.com

  • Phone: +39 0831 564 257 (Mon–Fri 9am–1pm / 3.30pm–8pm, Sat 9am–1pm, Italian time)

  • Post: NetFerry Srl, C.so Garibaldi 112, Brindisi, Italy

For transport problems (delays, quality of on-board service, damage to luggage), the complaint must be submitted to the ferry company: we can help you as an intermediary.

FAQ Category: Useful information

If we cannot resolve the complaint, can I turn to a conciliation body (ADR)?

The ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) procedure is an out-of-court dispute resolution system provided for by Italian Legislative Decree 130/2015 (which implements European Directive 2013/11/EU).

How it works:

  • Before starting the ADR, you have made a formal complaint to NetFerry or the ferry company (to info@netferry.com) without a satisfactory resolution

  • Once the response deadlines have passed, you can turn to an ADR body listed in the official registers

  • A neutral conciliator helps the parties reach an agreement

Advantages of the ADR procedure:

  • Lower costs than a lawsuit

  • Faster timescales (generally 90 days)

  • Confidentiality of the procedure

  • The agreement reached is contractually binding between the parties

  • Failure to reach an agreement does not prejudice your right to go to court

Alternative: the European ODR platform

For cross-border disputes you can use the European Commission's ODR (Online Dispute Resolution) platform: ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr

For disputes relating to the transport itself (delays, cancellations, quality of on-board service), competence lies with the Italian Transport Regulation Authority (ART): responsibility rests with the ferry company, not NetFerry.

ℹ️ You will find the relevant ADR body and the detailed procedures in our General Conditions.
