History: thirty years between Finland and Estonia
The company was founded in 1994 under the name Eestin Linjat. Its first scheduled sailing left Helsinki's Olympia Terminal on 4 September 1994 aboard the Alandia, a few years after Estonia regained its independence. In 1995 operations moved to Helsinki's West Harbour in the Jätkäsaari district, and in 1997 the company took the name Eckerö Line.
In the years that followed, the company grew alongside the ties between the two countries. In 1998 the Nordlandia entered service, at the time the largest ship on the route. In 2000 Eckerö Line was among the first companies in the sector to sell tickets online. When Estonia joined the European Union in 2004, it also expanded its freight business. On 31 December 2012 the Finlandia entered service, significantly cutting crossing times. In 2019 the Finbo Cargo joined the fleet on the route between the commercial ports of Vuosaari and Muuga. In 2023 the company carried more than two million passengers in a year for the first time, and in 2024 it celebrated thirty years of operations.
Eckerö Line routes
Helsinki–Tallinn. This is the main route, served by the Finlandia with several departures a day and the first morning sailing from both ports. The crossing takes about two and a half hours. In Helsinki the ship departs from West Terminal T2 (Tyynenmerenkatu 14) in Jätkäsaari, a short distance from the city centre. In Tallinn it arrives at the A-Terminal of the passenger port (Sadama 25-2), a few steps from the Old Town.
Vuosaari–Muuga. The Finbo Cargo route links the freight ports of Helsinki and Tallinn in about 2 hours 45 minutes, including overnight sailings. It is a good option for those travelling by car or motorhome who want to avoid city-centre traffic.
The fleet
- Finlandia: built in 2001 by the Daewoo shipyard in South Korea, she has sailed for Eckerö Line since 2012. She is 175 metres long, cruises at 27 knots and carries up to 2,080 passengers. The vehicle deck offers about 1,900 lane metres for cars and heavy vehicles. Her 1A ice class allows her to operate all year round, even in the coldest months. In 2024 she was refitted with new rudders and propellers to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
- Finbo Cargo: in service since 2019 between Vuosaari and Muuga, she mainly carries lorries and travellers with their own vehicle.
On-board facilities
The Finlandia is designed to make a daytime crossing enjoyable. The Buffet Eckerö serves Finnish cuisine prepared on board, while Bistro & Cafe Satama, the bars and restaurants cover quick meals and coffee breaks. For a quieter journey you can book the Horizon Seats, armchairs with a sea view, or the Lounge. Groups can use the Captain's Lounge, and businesses have a conference centre. Children's areas and on-board shops complete the offer.
Cabins are designed for resting during the crossing: 4-berth outside and inside cabins, 2-berth inside cabins and office cabins with a desk and Wi-Fi. Cabins for passengers with allergies or reduced mobility are also available. All cabins have a bathroom with shower, and the cabin key can be downloaded to the company's app.
Pets travel free of charge, but their place must be booked together with the ticket and availability is limited. On the Finlandia they can stay with their owner in public areas if they are in a carrier. Alternatively, you can book a pet cabin for an additional charge or leave the pet in the car. An EU pet passport is required for travel between Finland and Estonia.
