Porto Santo Stefano is a port town on the west coast of Italy, in the Province of Grosseto in the region of Tuscany. Because of its geographical location, it has always been a popular Mediterranean resort since ancient times.

Places to visit

There are many traces left by the Romans, including the remains of the Baths of Domitian. Under Spanish rule, the city developed a lot they built the Spanish fortress in this period. Among the sites of historical and artistic in Porto Santo Stefano, there is the Church of Santo Stefano which was built in 1700 and then rebuilt again after World War II. There is also Villa La Giocondiana, The Spanish Fortress, which was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth century to defend the town against pirate raids and enemy attacks. Also, Torre del Calvello, which is a watchtower, built in the Spanish era and today only the remains remain. Porto Santo Stefano has an ancient carnival tradition where everyone disguises himself or herself by wearing worn clothes to signify a departure from the social and sexual order during the festivities.

Beaches

Near Porto Santo Stefano there is I Bagni di Domiziano, which is a beach hidden by olive trees with shallow water. It is particularly suitable for children and is located in front of the Roman villa and during low tide you can see the remains of ancient tanks in which fish were farmed. Pozzarello beach has sand and pebbles and a lovely calm and limpid sea. Cacciarella, is a very small sandy beach located between two cliffs. Finally Cala del Gesso is one of the most beautiful beaches, it has crystal clear sea making it perfect for snorkelling.
