DFDS is one of the oldest and largest shipping companies in Europe. Founded in Copenhagen in 1866, where it is still headquartered and listed on the stock exchange, it now runs a network of ferry, road transport and logistics services connecting more than 20 countries, with around 15,000 employees and over 5 million passengers carried every year. The DFDS Seaways brand covers the passenger division: short crossings on the English Channel, overnight sailings across the North Sea and in Scandinavia, routes in the Baltic Sea and services to the island of Jersey.

DFDS was created on the initiative of Danish financier Carl Frederik Tietgen, who brought several Danish steamship companies together as Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab, the "United Steamship Company". Its purpose was to support the trade driven by industrialisation: coal and manufactured goods from the United Kingdom to Scandinavia, and Danish farm produce to the British market. By the end of the 19th century DFDS was among the ten largest shipowners in the world.
In the late 1960s the company was one of the first to develop ro-ro services, allowing lorries and trailers to drive on and off the ship under their own power. In 2001 it entered the Baltic with the acquisition of Lithuanian operator LISCO, and in 2010 it took over Norfolkline and arrived on the English Channel, adopting the DFDS Seaways brand for all its passenger routes. Since 28 March 2025 it has operated Jersey's ferry services under a 20-year contract with the island's government.
The DFDS ferry passenger network covers four areas:
English Channel (UK–France). Dover–Calais, with up to 30 departures a day and a crossing of around an hour and a half, and Dover–Dunkirk, with up to 22 daily departures taking around two hours, are the company's highest-frequency routes. These routes are for vehicle passengers only: foot passengers are not accepted.
North Sea and Scandinavia. Newcastle–Amsterdam is a daily overnight crossing of around 15 hours, arriving at the port of IJmuiden on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Copenhagen–Oslo links the two capitals with one departure a day in each direction and a night on board, calling at Frederikshavn on the northern coast of Jutland.
Baltic Sea. DFDS connects Lithuania with Germany on Kiel–Klaipėda and with Sweden on Karlshamn–Klaipėda, the latter with nightly departures. Kapellskär–Paldiski links the Stockholm area with the Tallinn area in around 9 hours 30 minutes. Trelleborg–Klaipėda, also available with DFDS, is operated by partner TT-Line.
Jersey (Channel Islands). From the island there are sailings to Portsmouth on a conventional ferry and to Poole and Saint-Malo on fast craft, making Jersey easy to reach from both England and Brittany.

On the overnight North Sea and Scandinavian routes, DFDS ships are true cruise ferries: interior and exterior cabins in several categories, including Commodore cabins with extra services, an international buffet and an à la carte restaurant, bars with live music, cinemas, children's areas and a duty-free shop. Copenhagen–Oslo also offers a spa. In the Baltic the newer ships have three restaurants, three bars, a shop and a play area, while the short Channel crossings offer restaurants, a café, a shop and a premium lounge.
Pets are welcome: on overnight routes there are cabins where pets are allowed, which must be booked in full, and dogs and cats can also stay in your vehicle during the crossing. Rules vary by route, so it is advisable to check them when booking.

DFDS Seaways provides specially equipped cabins for passengers traveling with pets. Standard cabins are not available for these passengers, as a full cabin must be booked. Pets must remain in appropriate carriers or cages, and dogs are required to wear a muzzle. Pets are not allowed on passenger beds. It is also possible to leave dogs and cats in vehicles or campers for the duration of the crossing. At the crew’s discretion and if conditions allow, owners may be permitted to visit their pets in the garage deck during designated times.
