BALEARIC ISLANDS

Guide of BALEARIC ISLANDS

The Baleric Islands are in the western Mediterranean Sea and include Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the capital city is Palma de Mallorca and the two official languages are Spanish and Catalan.

History

The Balearic Islands were at the centre of Roman raids and suffered Vandal and Berber dominations, they were also subjected to the Kingdom of Aragon and the British. The oldest architectural structures in the Balearic Islands are the talaiots, or talayots, which are Bronze Age megaliths that can be found on the islands of Menorca and Majorca, forming part of the Talaiotic Culture. There are also navetas ion Menorca, a form of megalithic chamber tomb unique to the island.

Climate

The climate is mild and Mediterranean, so the Balearics are a popular tourist destination throughout the year.  The Islands have white sand beaches and crystal clear water and the landscapes are rich with flora and fauna. One of the smaller islands is Cabrera, which has a wonderful National Park. The Balearic Islands are also famous for the nightlife, there are many world-famous nightclubs in Ibiza, such as Pacha.
